The Time Has Come

I was introduced very casually to blogging in 2006 when staff from my university asked me to be a Spider Diarist – simply someone who wrote about their time at school and answered prospective students' questions. It was a pretty laid-back experience overall – I turned in one to two posts a week, with pictures, until the end of my junior year. Then it was time for somebody else, somebody newer (and somebody less jaded, perhaps), to take over my position.

Many things have happened over the course of four years. I've lost friends, gained friends and found a way to escape the claustrophobic hold school can have on your imagination. During the last three and a half years, I have written two feature-length screenplays and am in the middle of finishing a third. I've become more comfortable with holding a camera, editing my raw footage and manipulating time and space to get the shots that I want. Things didn't always go as planned, but they rarely do. And I like a challenge.

For me, the most pressing challenges during that time were those that I have dealt with my entire life. I've been trying desperately to rid myself of procrastinating (I keep putting it off) and that inner voice that so politely and sinisterly tells me there's no point trying to get the things that I want.

I'm glad the time has come to shut the voice, and its owner, in a box in the back of my brain that is triple locked and secured by the million-pound, comatose troll that sits on top of it. The procrastination too has less hold than it once did.

On Saturday, my friend Steph and I will be conducting our first rehearsal for a short film we're producing. It's a comedy, a parody, about that certain time of the month. It will, probably hilariously, help us hone our skills as beginner filmmakers with very little training. Though Steph doesn't have an aspirations as a filmmaker, she is more than willing to help me out with this one, both as a co-writer and actor.

I'll post again later about our trial run.
